On paper the blending of Sherlock Holmes, Voodoo, Zombies and Jack The Ripper sounds fascinating but the implementation of trying to shoe horn them all into a plausible story was not
My enjoyment of the investigation was further enhanced by the social commentary.
The Possession is the definition of creepy: with different realities, town secrets and weird occurrences. This book made me look up the definition of paranormal and supernatural and realise that both applied.
What has sold this to me is how likeable the young people are, the friendship which binds them and trying to get to the bottom of the overarching plot, what is H.I.V.E and G.L.O.V.E really about.
I started to really like this book when things started to go wrong, culminating with the group trapped in the cave. That’s when it decided to get eerie, creepy and claustrophobic.
I enjoyed it, especially Mary the plucky female who made the best of the hand she was dealt, took the opportunity which was presented her way and ran with it.
A Bit Of A Stretch was Informative, insightful and oddly entertaining. The latter sits a tad uncomfortably, given the subject matter and the humorous moments.
Wavorly was a one dimensional character who spent the whole time repetitiously drumming it into the reader’s head just how awful vampires were and she was the only one who could see.. that is until she didn’t.
I enjoyed this trip through interconnected relationships to the vivid backdrop of England between the two world wars, the ramifications of love in all its guises and evidence that bigotry – overt or understated – is still harmful. It is a nuanced rendition of cause and effect and particularly touching to read during this period around Remembrance Sunday.
