Review – A Family Matter by Will Eisner

A Family Matter depicts a dysfunctional family that that is too real for comfort. As we learn more about the characters in particular the patriarch Poppa and the long dead Momma, we despair about the reach of people who should never have been parents. This graphic novel is a challenging read but worth it.

Kissing Emma is an accurate and disheartening representation of current stories you hear time and time again in the news: young people caught up in a spiral of poverty, addiction and/or domestic violence with very few positive options to escape. These shouldn’t be familiar stories, we shouldn’t be desensitised, but we are.

Book Review – The Porpoise by Mark Haddon

I’m still at a loss for words to sum up this book which is a rich, lyrical retelling of two Greek myths. I am glad that I read it, but it was a difficult read on a number of levels. It was enthralling and harrowing in equal measure. Not for the faint hearted.
